What is Auto Backup? How do I enable Auto Backup in Tally.ERP 9?

What is auto backup? 

  As the name suggests this feature is capable of automatically taking data back up. Designed with the objective of taking data back up in the background for every master created or transaction recorded, the auto backup utility takes the data back up with minimal human interference and without any hindrance/disturbance. Hence, the entire process up goes unnoticed.

A copy of the masters and transactions recorded are stored in the file named ABK.900 which resides in the respective company folder. The ABK.900 file stores up to 60 versions of the data backup. Each version of the auto backup available stores a single day’s data back up, the ABK.900 file, at any point, will have data backup for the previous 60 days from the current date subject to the commencement date of the respective company. While saving the data backups, the auto backup utility follows the Last In First Out mechanism, the first backup taken is overwritten while storing the 61^st backup file.

As a copy of data is stored and readily available, users can quickly restore the backup on encountering any issues related to data corruption or while rewriting the data.

How to do  auto backup in Tally.ERP9? 

Enable Auto Backup 

Auto backup can be enabled either while creating or altering the company. You can follow the steps shown while creating or altering the company. 

Creating the Company 

To enable auto backup while creating the company follow the steps shown:

• Start Tally.ERP 9

In the Company Info menu

• Select Create Company

In the Company Creation screen

• Set Yes to Enable Auto Backup

Altering the Company 

In the Gateway of Tally

• Press Alt+F3 or click F3: Cmp Info

The Company Info menu appears

• Select Alter
• Select the required company from the List of Companies displayed

In the Company Alteration screen

• Set Yes to Enable Auto Backup

On saving the company, the ABK.900 file is created in the data folder of the respective company.

You can now proceed to record transactions in the respective company, the auto backup utility will back up the data commencing with the first transaction in ABK.900 file.

Note: - From Release 5 onwards Autobackup option is removed from company creation/alteration scree.

Reason for autobackup removed.

The design of Auto backup needs revamp. The new design will allow us to effectively fix the issues found in this functionality. The restore capability will continue to be available.
